Speak up for right whales!

Last week, Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) proposed a rider to the Omnibus appropriations bill that would delay any further requirements to protect right whales from accidental entanglements in fishing gear for TEN years.  Collins strategically proposed the language at the last minute knowing there is no debate provision because the Omnibus must pass to avoid a government shutdown.  The bill is scheduled to be voted on this week.

NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service has determined that risk of accidental lethal entanglements in US fishing gear must be reduced by 90% to prevent the right whale’s extinction.  A U.S. federal judge agreed and mandated that further risk reduction measures be put in place no later than December of 2024.

Last year, NMFS created the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Team to develop a comprehensive plan to reduce lethal entanglements still further.  The team includes federal and state agency representatives, members of the fishing industry, and conservation organizations and scientists whose research has provided evidence that entanglements are a leading cause of injury and mortality to the species.  Earlier this month, the Team provided lots of recommendations to NMFS to consider. But in an attempted end run around the court’s orders and the Team’s efforts, Senator Collins’ rider would prevent NMFS from moving forward to translate these recommendations into regulations for at least 10 years, a timeframe far beyond what this species can tolerate.

This rider is not a death threat – it is a death warrant for right whales. If enacted, it also sets a dangerous precedent for other imperiled species and for the bedrock American values of separation of powers and respect for the rule of law.

Email your Senators about right whales!

The ask is simple -

Please send an email to both of your senators (no matter what state you live in)  and tell them that you want to save endangered North Atlantic right whales. Use your voice to ask them to support the Right Whale Coexistence Act (S. 3664), which would provide 10 years of funding to right whale research and conservation.

Be sure to refresh and send 2 emails - one to EACH of your senators. It can double your impact!
