We're making great progress to protect Southern Resident orcas, salmon, and their habitat in the current Washington State legislature! All of the orca-related bills have made it past the first hurdles and passed through the first Chamber (either the House or the Senate).

Now we need YOU to reach out to your elected officials in the Washington State Senate and urge them to vote for Southern Resident recovery.

These bills have already passed the House, now they need to pass the Senate as well:

The bills: HB 1579: Habitat Protection for salmon and forage fish. HB 1578: Oil Spill Prevention. HB 1580: Protection from Vessels.

What they do: Protects shoreline habitat for forage fish and salmon; enacts new safety requirements for oil transportation in Washington waters; creates additional regulations for operating vessels around orcas.

I am writing you today to urge you to vote for strong measures to protect habitat, salmon, and Southern Resident orcas, and advance efforts for the recovery of these iconic orcas in our state.

Following the Governor's Orca Recovery Task Force, bills to improve protection of habitat, reduce oil spill risk, clean up toxic chemicals, and reduce vessel disturbance have been introduced this session.  All of these are vital pieces of what orcas need to survive and recover - abundant salmon, clean waters, and the space and quiet to forage, rest, and communicate.

These bills allow state agencies to better enact and enforce regulations, improve the quality and health of our waters, protect our coastal resources from the threats of oil spills and pollution, and reduces vessel impacts from noise and disturbance.

For the Southern Residents to survive, we must start with their home, waters that we share with them.  We need better habitat protection at all levels to restore important shoreline areas for forage fish, the base of the food web in the Salish Sea.  We need to address chemicals at their source in consumer products and ensure they never reach our waters, impacting the health of fish, orcas, and humans alike.  We need to ensure safe transport of oil through our state waters and be prepared in case of a catastrophic spill.  And we must reduce the noise and harassment from increasing numbers of vessels in the Salish Sea.

I fully support legislation for Southern Resident orca recovery, and I urge you to do the same.   These bills have already passed through the House, and they are now in your hands - please vote in favor of these bills to help orcas, salmon, and our shared home.

HB 1579: Implementing recommendations of the southern resident killer whale task force related to increasing chinook abundance (Habitat protection for salmon and forage fish).
HB 1578: Reducing threats to southern resident killer whales by improving the safety of oil transportation (Oil Spill prevention).
HB 1580: Concerning the protection of southern resident orca whales from vessels (reduces impact from vessels).
